Notes
- Lines 1–4 finish the sentence begun at 78b:45–47: had the chain been doubled from the right thigh, a positive commandment would have sufficed; since it is single, a prohibition was needed. The thigh is Jacob’s (Genesis 32:26, 32:33). The words העגלה[?] קשה[?] at 3–4 are not secure. The proof-text is Numbers 25:1, which the Oxford parchment includes in its own text. Textual note. ↩
- The lemma rewrites Numbers 25:4 (הוקע אותם לה׳ נגד השמש); “the angel who spoke with me” is Zechariah 1:9. The scribe first wrote הוקם and then the full הוקענום. “Iniquity stops her mouth” is Job 5:16. The identification of Phinehas with Elijah appears in Pirqe de-Rabbi Eliezer 47 and Targum Pseudo-Jonathan to Numbers 25:12. For the spear of Numbers 25:7 both witnesses read ויקח הוד. The covenant of peace is Numbers 25:12; “Behold, My angel shall go before you” is Exodus 32:34 (cf. 23:23). Enoch as the “known prince” is Metatron. The abbreviation at line 9 (מ״ה[?]) is uncertain; “does not distinguish between good and evil” is said of the destroyer in b. Bava Qamma 60a. Source analysis. ↩
- Shittim (Numbers 25:1) is read here from an uncertain משטה[?]. The doubled chain rests on Yesod through Joseph’s merit; Joseph is the Righteous One, as on 78b. Genesis 2:4 בהבראם is read בה׳ בראם, “with he He created them” (b. Menahot 29b); both witnesses divide the word. אני and אין are anagrams, and “the beginning of thought is the end of action” echoes Sefer Yetzirah 1:7 (“its end is fixed in its beginning”). Rabbinic and kabbalistic note. ↩
- Elijah’s water is 1 Kings 18:32–35 and his ascent 2 Kings 2:11. “From ayin shall my help come” is Psalm 121:1 read as “from Nothing”. “Wisdom … lost” adapts Job 28:12. נקם and קץ both equal 190; the “sword that avenges” is Leviticus 26:25. The letters of אליהו are read as אל יהו[ה]. Isaiah 35:4 and Malachi 3:23 follow; “his name is like his Master’s name” is said of Metatron in b. Sanhedrin 38b and is applied here to Elijah. “You shall bruise his head” reworks Genesis 3:15. “You shall stand in the cleft of the rock” combines Exodus 33:21–22. Line 33 מוניק[?] is unresolved; an earlier draft read ועל כן אותיות, which would fit the sense, but the image does not clearly support it. Biblical and textual note. ↩
- “He lodges in the shadow of Shaddai” is Psalm 91:1; the “known prince” is Metatron, as at line 14. “The Righteous, foundation of the world” is Proverbs 10:25 (Yesod). “The best of serpents—crush its brain” is a rabbinic maxim (Mekhilta, Beshallah 1; y. Qiddushin 4:11; Soferim 15:10); Oxford completes it with את מוחו. The commentary advises that thought may rest on Malkhut only as a passing “station”, not constantly, because the material power issues from there. The sentence continues on folio 79b. Interpretive note. ↩
