Notes
- Pishon and the good gold come from Genesis 2:11–12; the calf from Exodus 32:1 and 32:24. Joseph is an ox in Deuteronomy 33:17, while “the righteous one is the foundation of the world” comes from Proverbs 10:25. Isaiah 57:1 supplies “the righteous one perishes, and no one takes it to heart.” The end of JTS line 12 is too damaged or corrupt for a responsible continuous translation. Biblical and textual note. ↩
- “My name is within him” is Exodus 23:21, interpreted of Metatron in b. Sanhedrin 38b. Michael is “the great prince” in Daniel 12:1. The staffs refer to Exodus 14:16 and Numbers 20:11; Ecclesiastes 1:7 supplies the rivers and sea, and Exodus 15:2 supplies זה אלי ואנוהו. The commentary uses the standard maxim that the messenger possesses only the power of the one who sends him. Source analysis. ↩
- The passage draws successively on Numbers 22:28, 22:25, 22:31–33, and 23:8. The leaning wall as something that recalls a person’s sins appears in b. Berakhot 55a. The drawn sword also evokes the turning sword of Genesis 3:24. The commentary’s three-part description of circumcision reflects medieval practice and is presented here as its historical interpretation, not as medical guidance. Rabbinic and historical note. ↩
- The syntax of lines 40–44 is difficult, but the explicit assignment in line 41 is clear: positive commandment = Hod; negative commandment = Netzach. “Single” and “doubled” describe channels from the thighs to the body of the Chariot. The sentence continues on folio 79a. Interpretive note. ↩
