Visual and comparative apparatus

The folio turns the four rivers of Eden into a sequence of sefirotic and mythic correspondences, then shifts from river imagery to the two trees at the garden’s center.

1. The four-river sequence across fols. 76b–77a

Figure 1. The Oxford text explicitly labels the four heads חכמה, בינה, גדולה, גבורה. The commentary’s repeated assignment of both Gihon and Euphrates to Pachad may reflect textual corruption, a more complex internal distinction, or a problem in the present transcription; it should not yet be harmonized.

2. From rivers to trees

Notes

  1. The opening completes the exposition of Ps. 15:2 begun on fol. 76b. The movement “from below upward” appears to explain the ordered verbs: first walking in integrity (Binah/Mercy), then acting in righteousness (Chokhmah/Judgment). The syntax of line 5 is difficult, but the point seems to be that the pairing is deliberate. Translator’s interpretation.↩
  2. The lemma combines Gen. 2:13 and Gen. 10:8; “upon your belly shall you go” is Gen. 3:14, while “hunt game for me” is Gen. 27:3. The wordplay links גיחון with גחון, belly. Biblical identifications.↩
  3. The passage invokes “Rabad,” probably the commentary on Sefer Yetzirah transmitted under that attribution. The right/left assignments as currently transcribed are internally difficult: Gedulah and Chesed are normally synonyms, yet line 21 appears to place them on opposite sides. This needs manuscript collation rather than harmonization. Text-critical caution.↩
  4. The lemma joins Gen. 2:14, fertility language based on Gen. 1:28, and “These are the generations of Esau” (Gen. 36:1). Its association of proliferation with material appetite converts the river’s name into a moral-psychological symbol. Source analysis.↩
  5. The Jacob narrative is Gen. 32:25–29. The identification of Esau’s angel with Samael is widespread in rabbinic and medieval sources; compare Genesis Rabbah 77–78. The reading “Gabriel” in line 34 is clear in the image (rechecked 27 September 2026). It sits awkwardly with the identification of Esau’s prince as Samael in the same line; the syntax may mean that the angel whom Michael “released” is Gabriel, while the one appointed as Esau’s prince is Samael, but the sentence is compressed and the relation remains uncertain. Source and textual note.↩
  6. “Weak he” (ה״א רפה) refers to the final letter of the Tetragrammaton, conventionally mapped to Malkhut/Shekhinah. “Daughter of Jacob” similarly presents the feminine final grade as receiving from the middle line identified with Jacob. Kabbalistic terminology.↩
  7. The quotation “the way of a serpent upon a rock” is Prov. 30:19; the preceding allusion to earth quaking under a servant and maidservant is Prov. 30:21–23. Oxford reads והוא הנחש, “and he is the serpent,” which is almost certainly the intended lemma: JTS line 42 immediately explains that the one who fought Jacob “is the serpent.” The present translation displays the recorded JTS reading but does not defend it. Oxford-supported correction proposed.↩
